Young Leaders’ Regional Thematic Network (RTN)

The Young Leaders’ Regional Thematic Network (RTN) is a programme designed for young adults (25-35 years old) from the MENA region, who wish to intensively reflect upon concepts of social justice. Through discussions with political representatives, civil society actors and academic experts the RTN participants explore the numerous political, socio-economic and ecological challenges which MENA countries are currently facing.

The programme aims to empower young adults in the MENA region to become politically active and partake in the social and economic development of their country. Throughout the programme participants deepen their knowledge and gain a comprehensive understanding of national and regional issues. They also get the opportunity to exchange experiences and build cross border networks. The activities enable the participants to deepen their understanding of policy concepts, acquire capacities to advocate their positions and connect to other committed individuals in the region. The group is composed of participants from Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia and Yemen.

The programme cycle includes regional conferences and training workshops, during which participants strengthen their thematic knowledge and personal skills. Next to the regional conferences the programme will also arrange for the participation of participants at activities, which are part of FES regional projects.

Young Leaders' National Networks

The Young Leaders (YL) programme of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) aims to strengthen the political participation of young people in democratic processes. The Young Leaders' National Networks in the region mobilize a select number of young people and build their capacities to tackle major political and socio-economic challenges their societies are facing.

For these reasons, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung provides opportunities for programme participants to:

  • form a network among themselves with the participation of experts from the political sphere and civil society;
  • develop and improve their analysis, communication and negotiation skills;
  • gain practical project skills and experience via the conceptualisation and autonomous implementation of small projects;
  • participate in policy debates on major current issues at the national, regional and international level;
  • access regional and international youth networks, and to improve their basic socio-political and economic knowledge.
